Merry Christmas! Ed Hanway, Cigna CEO, is getting a $73,200,000 golden parachute

Posted on December 22nd, 2009 by Jason Rosenbaum in Profits Before People

Ed Hanway, CEO of Cigna, one of the nation's largest health insurance companies, will step down at the end of this year, in just over a week. When he does, he'll get $73,200,000 as compensation for a job well done.

What makes Hanway worth $73.2 million? Well, for one example, he's presided as Cigna denied a liver transplant to 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan, causing her death and widespread outrage. Wendell Potter, Cigna's former spokesperson turned whistle-blower, was at the company during the Sarkisyan scandal, and he explains its effect on him personally, as well as how the company thinks about denying care:

In our system today, there is literally no repercussions for insurance companies when they deny care, jack up rates, or do all the other things they do to screw over their customers. Ed Hanway did all those things as much as he could, and for that, he's being rewarded.

Out there in America, people are losing their jobs. They're losing their homes. They're skimping on holiday gifts to put food on the table. And they're still going bankrupt due to skyrocketing medical costs.

Meanwhile, insurance company stocks are "on fire" in reaction to the Senate bill, which, though it has some regulations, leaves people at the mercy of private insurance because it lacks a public health insurance option.

People out there are suffering, insurance companies are winning, and Ed Hanway is walking away with $73.2 million.

We've managed to track down Hanway's personal email address. This isn't a spam box or an unattended address, this is Hanway's actual corporate email. It's H.Edward.Hanway@CIGNA.com.

Send him an email. Tell him what you think of his golden parachute. While you're at it, why don't you tell Hanway what you'd like for Christmas, and what you'd buy with his money. You can leave a message on Cigna's Facebook page as well, if you want.

Iam Republican says:

He deserves every penny of his bonus. You uneducated people out there that are for higher taxes and more government don't realize that you need 73 million nowadays to afford good health care!

Pete Sutliff says:

I'm sure that $73.2 million parachute won't slow his descent into hell one bit.

Who Regulates the Insurance Industry? Why aren't these CEO's doing Jail Time!

Kathleen Dartez says:

Part of his bonus was earned on the back of my 4 year old son, who has Joubert Syndrome and requires extensive therapy — physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Mr. Hanway's organization only covered 50 visits, saying that was what the contract provided and they were not willing to make an exception to provide habilitative services for a 4 yr. old child. How many children could receive therapy for $73,200,000?? How many children could possibly walk, or talk or chew their food for this amount of money??? This is a disgrace. Why are the politicians so afraid to stand up to these corporations and stand up for our children and families???

ar Mr Hanaway and Family:
Congratulations on your retirement and your LAVISH 'golden parachute' that assures that you and your family will be cared for, warm, safe, secure and unaffected by the current state OF "Our" country.
We as an UNINSURED tax Paying American Families feel very grateful this holiday season that people like you and yours are warm, safe, free from the pressures of the world as it is for the rest of us in America Today…
we would like to wish you and yours a very Merry and PROSPEROUS Christmas because we believe in the American way.
We believe in freedom to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in this country where even though there are hundreds of thousands of people starving in the streets, children who die for reasons unknown and known because great countries like ours allow for great companies like yours to THRIVE and grow rich and fat. Our great country also allows hundreds of thousands starve and die because they were denied 'health care' from the INSURANCE that took food off their tables to pay for, only to be denied and then die because of it.
Those same companies are rewarding their 'officers' for doing just that! How marvelous you must feel to know that you and yours were rewarded for the death and suffering of thousands of innocents! How grateful you must feel! how proud!!

Its so heartwarming to know that not all of us have to suffer.. just the peon's, but not big important people like you!

what a great comfort it is for you to know that you are taken care of… but… If only more of us could have some modicum of comfort and care in the assurance of our INSURANCE coverage that at least those costs, the costs of basic healthcare are assured us.
It must be so comforting to know that you and yours will not be touched at all by the crisis in our country today… so comforting to know that only some of us will die and be denied these basic rights, but rich people like you and your friends, family and relatives are warm in their beds, knowing that their lives are free from such horrors, stresses and care…

God is a wonderfully merciful God in that he protects those like you who were born and found the right place at the right time and that you made all those hard choices you made to get where you are today… at the top of a HEAP OF DEATH and SOON TO BE DYING individuals, children, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts uncles, nieces and nephews, sons and daughters just like you and yours, so that you can reap the benefits of that huge COMPANY called CIGNA "HEALTH CARE"….
but really euphemisms should not be used here at this special time of year when we are all thankful for something and I am CERTAIN YOU ARE thankful for 'DENIAL CARE" insurance companies like CIGNA and UNITED HEALTH CARE and AETNA and on and on…

ALL of you fortunate ones should also be VERY thankful and grateful that today, the American people lack the spine and the fortitude to tar and feather and or to LYNCH big hot shots like you anymore, in light of the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of people die at the swift movement of your wrist in a single movement to DENY them their rightful HEALTH care when they need it most…
God in his infinite mercy will undoubtedly 'reward' you too at the end of your days!

May it be in keeping with the great deeds that you did while you lived on this planet at the CEO of Cigna DEATH Care!

Sincerely
D. Denissov

Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. Give unto God, that which belongs to God.

It’s a simple fix. All we have to do is re-instate birthrights. There are a lot more dead people than live. If they set up foundations before they die, they will create a propagating, everlasting, taxable income stream that will pay for socialized health care, create jobs and rebuild social security. Not to mention the heirs will receive Legacy checks until they die. Go figure, God is always the answer.

Seriously $74 Million is well worth getting rid of the guy.

Personally I hope he uses it to go back to college and retake those ethics classes that it seems he doesn't remember. If he isn't responsible for the ethics problems in his former company, he'll at least learn not to go along with such corruption, and instead actually do something. That way he can be proud of his golden parachute next time when he gets fired; as then, it will be for his ethics being a "conflict of interest."
