Call today to defeat the Stupak anti-abortion amendment

Posted on November 7th, 2009 by Jason Rosenbaum in Take Action!

Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) is trying to radically change abortion law in this country today.

A central promise of health care reform is that if you like the health care coverage you have, you can keep it. Today in America, millions of women who buy health care on their own or who get it through the small business employer have abortion care coverage. Congressman Stupak's amendment would strip them of that coverage, breaking that central promise.

Stupak wants to outlaw abortion coverage in the new health insurance Exchange, where individuals and small businesses will purchase their coverage. Instead, women would only be able to purchase abortion coverage in a "abortion rider" plan - a single-service plan that covers abortion only. Such an "abortion rider" is discriminatory and illogical. Women do not plan to have unintended pregnancies (or pregnancies in which a complication will arise that will require ending the pregnancy). In fact, about half of all pregnancies are unintended. Abortion is simply not something that women plan to insure against.

Put simply, the Stupak amendment is a dramatic departure from current law which would restrict a women's right to choose. What's more, it would put an unprecedented restriction on people who pay for their own health insurance.

There is already a compromise in the House health care bill that reflects current law on the subject. The current bill prohibits federal funds from being used for abortion but still allows women to use their own money to buy the coverage they need.

This isn't good enough from Stupak, or, apparently, for the Members of Congress considering voting for this amendment. Below is a list of Representatives that need to hear from you today about this issue. If you live in their district, pick up the phone now and give them a call. This amendment will be voted on today, so time is of the essence.

This is a religious preference that should never be in the bill. A woman's right is to be protected, as it has always been, and not to be taken away. This will not only take away her right but also create gender discrimination, that just like putting a woman status back to the Dark Ages.

The bill is at a critical juncture and Stupak and his religious followers coerce the law makers into making a law that enforce the religious fanatic belief on the entire nation!!!

Fred Beloit says:

Hahaha. Go ahead, libs, force federal abortion funding (against the law) into the bill. That will help ensure it never gets through the Senate.

Juanita Bunch says:

Leave Womens rights alone.Stupak is stupid. What is the matter with all the crazys. Why are they killing are country.I hope come 2010 there is new and decent people to vote for.I won't vote for the greedys.I'll vote against all of them

erin says:

No one is forcing federal funding for abortions! thats just it! A womans right to choose to have an abortion and the procedure itself is NOT coming out of your pocket! Its coming from privatized insurance companies and NO ONE is asking YOU to pay, Fred.

"Here's the mistake people make. They think the public option is like public funding, but in truth the public option is funded with private money. So if you say a public option can't offer a legal medical procedure, what you are doing is greatly restricting a woman's right to choose, so the 'pro choice' caucus will not support that."

Everyone better keep fighting to keep this BS out!!

Trying to get people onboard for more visibility and made a facebook page called "MY PRESIDENT DOESN'T SIGN Health Care Reform Bills with Stupak Amendments!" hope it helps!

HOUSE APPROVES HARMFUL STUPAK-PITTS AMENDMENT

As a supporter of health care reform and an advocate for reproductive rights, 2to1: The Coalition to Preserve Choice is outraged by the passing of the harmful Stupak-Pitts amendment to HR3962. While we recognize the immediate need for health care reform, we are confident that it does not have to come at such a high cost to all women. We are truly disappointed that one of the anti-choice votes in support of this discriminatory amendment came from Rhode Island, a state where 51% of the population is female.

It is our hope that women will be better off after health care reform, rather than put in a worse situation with fewer health benefits than before. We believe in honest and equal treatment for women when it comes to health care, and we thank those, including Representative Patrick Kennedy, who are willing to stand up and support reproductive health openly.
We look forward to working in the future with legislators who consider the effects their votes have on women’s constitutional rights. Women’s reproductive choice has long been used as a bargaining chip in policy matters, and it is time for a change.

Carol says:

Abortion is a religious debate, keep it in the church. News flash, antiabortion advocates are not the only taxpayers.
